Lofree Hyzen Keyboard Review

I own several Lofree keyboards and appreciate the quality and features of each. Are they my ideal keyboards? The short answer is, not yet, but they're getting close.

What makes the Lofree Hyzen Different?

The Lofree Hyzen has many "first of its kind" features.

- Switches

The Kaihl Nexus switch sets the Lofree Hyzen keyboard apart from all others. The Nexus linear 2-in-1 mechanical magnetic switch redefines what a switch can be. As a mechanical switch, it has a 1.3 mm actuation point. As an HE switch, the actuation point is programmable.

- Keyboard Housing

The one-piece keyboard housing is made from solid 6063 Aluminum, providing durability and a premium feel.

- F Row Toggle Switch

A switch on the left side of the keyboard allows you to toggle the top row of the keyboard to serve as either standard number keys or Function keys.

- Battery Life

The 10,000 mAh battery capacity is higher than any keyboard in my current collection.

- Connectivity

Lofree offers a wired-only and a Tri-Mode model, each having an 8K polling rate. The Tri-Mode version supports three (3) Bluetooth, one (1) 2.4 GHz, and one (1) wired connection.

Out of the Box

I backed the Lofree Hyzen keyboard project on Kickstarter. Why? This is the first keyboard to support Mechanical and Hall-Effect (HE) switches and comes with a unique 2-in-1 Kaihl-Nexus switches installed just to prove it works.

The keyboard's carrying case has a unique shape and size, and unlike any other I've seen. If anything, the case seems oversized. However, it ensures that the keyboard is surrounded by padding and is more than adequately protected.

Many of the keyboard's features are typical of others. However, supporting both mechanical and HE switches is definitely unique. The Kaihl-Nexus switches on the Hyzen are very smooth, lightweight, and sound amazing.

This is the best-sounding keyboard I have experienced in as many years of typing. Unfortunately, the 12-degree angle is fixed and a little too steep for my style. I placed a couple of thin "shims" under the front "feet" to raise the keyboard to a more comfortable height.

The translucent keycaps are clean and smooth. Their thickness contributes to the refined feel and sound, and enhances the overall typing experience.

The knob on the rear of the keyboard has a premium tactile feel. No wobble, and it feels solid when you turn it.

The three-position mode switch allows you to switch between 2.4GHz, OFF, and Wired modes. The OFF switch isn't supported by many tri-mode keyboards and ensures the battery doesn't drain when the keyboard is not in use or stored. Of course, you still need to remember to switch it to the "OFF" position.

My Experience

I really like the keyboard's premium look, feel and sound. As mentioned earlier, it's one of the best-sounding keyboards in my collection. If not for the steep 12-degree tilt, I would rank this as one of the best in my collection.

Of course, I'll keep using the keyboard on occasion, but it doesn't make the cut as my daily driver.
